Testimony of Injury and Ability to Overcome
My name is Christopher Colt Norton. I work in the lobby at the Manchester office. On December 23rd, on my way to work I was involved in a wreck. I was stopped and about to turn left when I was rear ended by a Ford Ranger traveling at a high rate of speed. I awoke to a light shining in my eyes from a flight nurse who witnessed the accident. She held my neck still until the ambulance arrived. Her words were, 'I can't believe you survived this wreck." The truck hit me so hard that it broke off the driver’s seat and the seat belt. I ended up in the back seat on the passenger’s side. When the ambulance and fire truck moved me to the stretcher, I was experiencing excruciating neck pain. The paramedic said, "You must have someone looking over you to have survived that." At 2 a.m., my entire body went numb. My parents drove me to St. Thomas Midtown in Nashville where more scans and X-rays were completed. The tests revealed that my spinal cord was compressed to the size of a ribbon and after I had surgery, I was paralyzed for 9 days. I had to be turned every few hours to prevent bedsores. Then, the nurses used a sling to put me in a sitting position because I could not sit on my own. I had to have an NG tube because my digestive system had shut down. This is when the thoughts of never being able to do anything caused depression to set in. I was devastated. I did rehab at Trustpoint, followed by outpatient services at TOP Rehab. I am now fortunate enough to be able to work alongside amazing people that have helped me along my journey and recovery. I’m a member of the Nashville Sled Preds Ice Hockey team. I also like to go Kayaking, zip lining, and participate in wheelchair tennis. I am also a part of the Centron Study at Middle Tennessee State University, where I use the underwater treadmill and balance machine. I am now able to drive again, and have recently purchased and renovated my own home. I am truly blessed
